Unit 2: Our School Garden
1.1 Read the text.
Our school has a lovely garden in front of the big playground. A fence encloses the garden. In the garden, there are many beautiful flowers like roses, sunflowers, jasmines and marigolds. A swarm of butterflies dances on the flowers. It makes the garden look very beautiful.
There is a ditch near the corner of the garden. A group of frogs live there. Sometimes, we see a flock of birds sitting on the nearby trees, singing sweet songs.
We take care of the garden regularly. On a selected day, students from each class work together to clean the garden. We use a set of gardening tools like spades, rakes, and sickles. We water the plants and remove the weeds regularly. We also add compost to the soil for making it fertile.
The garden is full of plants and flowers. They give us joy and happiness. We love working in our school garden.

আমাদের স্কুলে বড় খেলার মাঠের সামনে একটি সুন্দর বাগান আছে। একটি বেড়া বাগানটিকে ঘিরে রেখেছে। বাগানে গোলাপ, সূর্যমুখী, জুঁই এবং গাঁদা ফুলের মতো অনেক সুন্দর ফুল আছে। প্রজাপতির একটি ঝাঁক ফুলের ওপর নাচতে থাকে। এটি বাগানটিকে খুব সুন্দর দেখায়।
বাগানের কোণার কাছে একটি নালা আছে। সেখানে একটি দল ব্যাঙ বাস করে। মাঝে মাঝে আমরা কাছের গাছে বসে থাকা পাখির ঝাঁককে মিষ্টি গান গাইতে দেখি।
আমরা নিয়মিত বাগানের যত্ন নিই। নির্ধারিত দিনে প্রতিটি শ্রেণির শিক্ষার্থীরা একসাথে বাগান পরিষ্কার করে। আমরা কোদাল, রেক এবং কাস্তের মতো বাগানের যন্ত্রপাতির একটি সেট ব্যবহার করি। আমরা গাছে পানি দিই এবং নিয়মিত আগাছা পরিষ্কার করি। আমরা মাটিকে উর্বর করার জন্য তাতে সারও দিই।
বাগানটি গাছপালা ও ফুলে ভরা। এগুলো আমাদের আনন্দ ও সুখ দেয়। আমরা আমাদের স্কুলের বাগানে কাজ করতে ভালোবাসি।

ইংরেজি গ্রামারে কোনো প্রাণি বা বস্তুর দলকে বিশেষ বিশেষ শব্দ দিয়ে বোঝানো হয় (যাকে Collective Nouns বলে)। নিচে সঠিক মিলগুলো দেওয়া হলো:

3.1 Language Focus: Common Noun and Collective Noun
Look at the words—school, garden, flower, plant in the text. These are common nouns.
A common noun refers to a general name of an object, place, group or item.
Examples of common nouns:
I bought a pen yesterday. (common object)
I am going to school. (common place)
Only ten students submitted homework today. (common group)
The car is out of fuel. (common item)
Again, look at the words—swarm, flock, group, set used in the text. These are naming words. They indicate a group of animals, people and objects. These words are collective nouns.
A collective noun is the name of a specific group of people, animals, or things.

১. Common Noun (সাধারণ বিশেষ্য)
Common Noun বলতে এমন নাম বোঝায় যা কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে না বুঝিয়ে বরং একই জাতীয় সবাইকে সাধারণভাবে বোঝায়।
উদাহরণ: 'Flower' (ফুল)। আপনি যখন 'Flower' বলেন, তখন এটি গোলাপ, জবা বা বেলি যেকোনো ফুল হতে পারে। এটি সাধারণ একটি নাম।
বইয়ের উদাহরণ:
Pen: পৃথিবীর যেকোনো কলমকেই আমরা 'pen' বলি।
Student: স্কুলে পড়া সব ছেলে-মেয়েই 'student', কারো আলাদা নাম ধরে বলা হচ্ছে না।
২. Collective Noun (সমষ্টিবাচক বিশেষ্য)
যখন কোনো শব্দ দিয়ে আলাদা আলাদা কাউকে না বুঝিয়ে একটি পুরো দল বা সমষ্টিকে বোঝানো হয়, তখন তাকে Collective Noun বলে। এটি একা কোনো কিছু নয়, বরং কয়েকজনের বা কয়েকটির একটি সেট।
উদাহরণ: 'Team' (দল)। একজন খেলোয়াড় দিয়ে টিম হয় না, অনেক খেলোয়াড় মিলে একটি টিম হয়। এই 'Team' শব্দটিই হলো Collective Noun।
বইয়ের উদাহরণ:
Flock of sheep: অনেকগুলো ভেড়া যখন একসাথে থাকে, তখন তাকে 'Flock' বা পাল বলা হয়।
Bunch of flowers: অনেকগুলো ফুল যখন একসাথে থাকে (যেমন তোড়া), তখন তাকে 'Bunch' বলা হয়।
পার্থক্য বোঝার সহজ উপায়:
সহজ কথায়: যখন আপনি একজনকে বোঝাচ্ছেন (যেমন: ১টি পাখি), সেটি Common Noun। আর যখন তাদের পুরো দলটাকে বোঝাচ্ছেন (যেমন: এক ঝাঁক পাখি), তখন সেই ঝাঁক বা 'Flock' শব্দটি হলো Collective Noun।
